The Luminex Multiplexing technology has a unique advantage in that it uses a population of data points to quantify a response. Once a defined number of data points are measured, the central tendency of the repetitive measurements is reported as the intensity value for the sample. The distribution of the data points may be dependent on the assay. Typically, distributions are non-normal and will have some level of outlier data points. The mean statistic is significantly influenced by outliers. The median statistic is less susceptible to outliers and is the best general use statistic for this type of distribution profile.
